Questions about websites
What is a domain name?
A domain name is a user-friendly name that identifies your website on the Internet. Examples: google.com, bing.com, kuduwebsites.com, etc.
What is a website host?
For other people to be able to visit your website, it needs to "live" on a computer that is connected to the Internet 24/7. The Internet also needs to know where that computer is. A website host provides such computers to their clients. You rent some space on one their computers and set your website up in that space. Along with the space for your website, most hosts also provide an amount of email accounts that you can create for your business. Not all website hosts are created equal. If we set up hosting for my clients, we go with reputable hosts that give good customer service.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is a website publishing platform, also known as a CMS or content management system. There are several other CMSs, like Joomla, Drupal, etc., but WordPress is by far the most popular CMS. WordPress allows us to get websites up and running fairly quickly. It also has an admin panel that lets people easily add pages or edit pages on websites. WordPress is our favorite platform for building websites. We have been using it exclusively since 2008. Learn more about WordPress.
What is SEO?
SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. It is a series op steps taken to help search engines understand your website content and to encourage search engines to bring more traffic to your website. The first part of that statement (understanding your website content) involves steps taken on each web page. Those steps are all about placing keywords related to your page content in certain places on the page. The second part of the statement (encouraging search engines to bring traffic) is all about obtaining links from other websites to your website. Learn more about SEO.
Questions about your project & working with us
Do I already have to own a domain name?
No. If you don't own a domain name yet, we can help you with getting a domain name registered.
If I don't have a website host, can you help me get one?
Yes, we certainly can. Sometimes it's even a good idea if you don't already have a host because that allows us to set you up with a good host. From our own experiences, we know which hosts are good. We also chat to other web developers, and know which hosts they like.
What are the first steps in getting my new website started?
The first step is obviously that you contact us for a free consultation. Together (yes, you're a part of this) we will then go through a discovery process wherein we will explore your business, what it offers, your clients and their needs, etc. Once the discovery process is complete, we will design a solution and present that to you. Upon your approval, we will sign a contract, and work can begin.
What can I do to help prepare for the website project?
There are several things that you can and should do to help prepare for your new website:
- Get an image of your company logo.
- Collect any images that you want to use on your website. Ideally, the images should be 800 x 600 pixels or bigger. (I make them smaller as needed.)
- Make a note of the URLs (website addresses) of any websites that have designs or layouts that you like.
- If you have a particular color scheme in mind that you'd like to use on the site, make a note of that.
- Give some thought to the various pages that you would like to have on the site. What information do you want to share with visitors?
- Think about the marketing goals that you would like to achieve.
How will we communicate about the project?
We are always happy to speak with clients on the phone. That said, we prefer email communications for the simple reason that there is then a written record of our communications. That offers two benefits: (1) It eliminates any disagreement about what was said. We're always on the same page. (2) It gives us something to refer back to if we need to confirm what your needs are.
How do payments for the project work?
50% of the project fee will be due prior to work starting. A further 25% will be due about mid-way through the project, with the remaining 25% being due upon delivery. We accept payments by check or via PayPal. (You can use a credit card via PayPal).
Will I be able to make changes to my website pages myself?
Yes, you will. One of the many reasons we build websites using WordPresss is because it allows clients to make changes to page content themselves. If, for example, you want to publish useful articles on your site, and you have someone in your company who will be writing the articles, we can set up a user account for that person and they can publish articles themselves.
Can you train us in how to use the WordPress admin panel?
Yes, absolutely. We can teach you how to use the admin panel. If questions come up after such training, we'll be here to provide the support you need.
Do you offer periodic website maintenance?
Yes, we offer several website maintenance packages. Unless you feel comfortable with doing regular maintenance yourself, it's a good idea to sign up for one of our packages. Learn more about our maintenance packages.
What is 'Kudu'?
A Kudu (pronounced 'koo doo') is a large antelope found in Africa.
They are magnificent animals... large, beautiful, fast, tough, and smart.
It is a beautiful sight to see a large Kudu bull run graciously up the side of a hill or mountain!
I have been lucky enough to see that many times 🙂
