What Is SEO And Why Is It Important?
What is SEO? So many people talk about it these days. Why is it so important?
In short, SEO is an acronym for search engine optimization.
What does that really mean? Let’s start right at the beginning…
What Is SEO Really?
Search engines, like Google or Bing, are in the business of finding information for people. Not just any old information… They want to find the best possible answer to any question or search phrase that a person may enter into the search box. That is their mission!
Search engines return two types of results, (a) paid results, or advertisements, and (b) free organic results. SEO, or search engine optimization, focuses on the latter… free organic search results.
If you, as a website owner, want the search engines to consider a page on your website to be one of the best possible answers for a person’s search phrase, then you need to do certain things on your web page to help the search engines understand the content of your page. It helps them make the connection between search phrase and web page.
That is a big part of what SEO is all about!
How Is SEO Done?
The whole process of SEO begins with keywords. That is, the search terms that people type into search engines to find information. There are keyword tools that make it easier to find the exact terms that people use.
Once a keyword (one or more words) is identified, it is then placed in prominent locations on the web page, like the page title, description, headlines, and throughout the text on the page. This must be done in a natural way. It must not be overdone!
Remember, the goal is to help search engines understand your page.
The goal not to try to trick search engines into showing your page in search results. These days, search engines are smart. Those who try to trick search engines, do so at the risk of being kicked out of search engine results completely. This is definitely not something that I engage in.
In a nutshell, that is SEO. It is really important because, if done correctly, the search engines will bring many visitors to your website for free.
